The 2006 Boys Weekend at Lake Blaine, Montana
August 21st, 2006 by Carlo
Sunsets from the Winn Montana house are something to behold. Alma and Curt were kind enough to let me, Henri and Denis stay at their newly-renovated pad on Lake Blaine for our annual boys weekend getaway. The house itself looks west towards Kalispell, so you can imagine that, in clear skies, the sunsets are nothing less than spectacular. We had a great time over the weekend; Henri and Denis drove down from Edmonton on Thursday 8/10, and took Logan Pass (i.e. Going To The Sun Road) through Glacier National Park en route to Lake Blaine. On the way down, they were treated to scenery like this…
I flew in to Glacier National Park Airport in Kalispell on a white-knuckle ride over the Rockies. I fly alot and I can take a fair amount of turbulence, but when the flight attendants give it the “oh, shit” that’s when I start to get worried. That, plus the lady in the opposite aisle seat holding her glass of red wine towards me so she wouldn’t spill it on herself. Thanks, lady, I’m wearing a pair of white shorts!
We took Friday as an R&R day, hanging out at the house in the morning, waiting for the furniture delivery guys to bring a couple dressers for the guest bedrooms. Later that day we went to a small town called Whitefish and had lunch at a funky cafe called “Loula’s”. After lunch, we walked around Whitefish, and there was an art fair in the community park. When it was time to go, we managed to find a Costco (Denis needed his fix) and picked up a TriTip and other various ansundry dinner items and had a relaxing BBQ on the deck.
Saturday brought another lazy morning and a hike to Avalanche Lake in Glacier National Park in the afternoon. It was a beautiful hike along Avalanche Creek to a majestic lake. Along the way we saw a lot of deer, and a lot of tourists. But even the line of hikers couldn’t take away from the beauty of the place. Denis struggled a bit from time to time with his hernia’s but man, that guy is tough!
We ate dinner on Saturday at a small pizza place called “Bugsy’s” in an equally small - but very cute - town called, ironically enough, Big Fork. The pizza place is owned by a Canadian from Regina, and our first clue was the Canadian Football game on the TV. Once again, we returned home with nothing to do but soak in the hot tub and drink wine. Man, what a hard life!
On Sunday, we finally made it out onto the lake. I had forgotten how much fun it is to drive the boat and on top of that, Alma and Curt have a WaveRunner. Denis had a great time on that, as did Henri. Most of the time we relaved on the boat, anchored in a calm cover, eating chips and soaking up the sun. We picked up Monique at the airport later that day, and went back on the lake for the rest of the afternoon. Monique got a kick out of watching Henri on the WaveRunner, a mischievous look in his eye, as he threatened to splash us with the WaveRunner’s rooster tail.
When we finally got tired of lazing around the lake (did I mention how hard life is here?) we cleaned up and went to dinner in Bog Fork at a cute place called “ShowThyme”. Its aptly named since it is right next door to the community theatre. We celebrated Henri’s and Denis’ birthdays with a beautifl dinner and a nice bottle of wine. Monique gave Henri a pair of blue golf ball finder glasses, which she dubbed “the blue ball finder”; we had a lot of fun with that gift!
Alas, as Henri puts it “for one vacation to begin, another has to end”.
Henri and Denis left on Monday morning and Monique and I stayed on for a few more days, enjoying the quiet, slow Montana life. Then it was back to Portland and reality. I look forward to doing this again next year!
